The United Kingdom has officially recognized octopuses, crabs, and lobsters as sentient beings under animal welfare law, following scientific findings highlighted by BBC News and supported by research commissioned by the UK Government.
The decision is based on evidence showing that these animals are capable of experiencing pain, distress, and pleasure. As a result, new regulations make it illegal to boil them alive and introduce stricter standards for their humane treatment in food preparation and handling.
An independent review led by the London School of Economics concluded that both cephalopods and decapod crustaceans should be included in animal welfare protections, prompting this legal change.
This milestone expands ethical considerations beyond traditional animal categories and reflects a growing global shift toward more humane and responsible treatment of all sentient life.
