Artificial Intelligence is rapidly transforming the way governments and institutions monitor populations. This research examines how AI driven surveillance technologies such as facial recognition, biometric identification, digital tracking, predictive monitoring, and large scale data analysis are increasingly used by state actors, particularly in China and Iran. The study explores how these systems can enable widespread monitoring of activists, journalists, dissidents, and ethnic or religious minorities, raising serious concerns about privacy, freedom of expression, civil liberties, and other fundamental human rights when transparency, accountability, and oversight are limited.

This project follows strict research standards emphasizing accuracy, transparency, and ethical responsibility. While AI tools may assist with research and drafting, all work is reviewed line by line, independently fact checked, properly cited, and required to be original and plagiarism free. Harsh Sentencing and Human Rights Violations in Drug-Related Offenses

Across many jurisdictions, harsh sentencing for drug-related offenses including those involving counterfeit drugs, prescription medications such as Adderall, and substances like methamphetamine continues to raise serious human rights concerns. Policies intended to protect public health and deter crime are too often resulting in disproportionately severe punishments, particularly for low-level, non-violent, or first-time offenders. Individuals can face lengthy prison terms or even capital punishment without sufficient legal protections, transparency, or consideration of underlying factors such as addiction, coercion, or economic vulnerability. The rise of counterfeit pharmaceuticals further complicates this landscape, frequently placing individuals with limited awareness or options into the same legal category as organized criminal actors. At the same time, systems that incentivize maximum sentencing outcomes raise critical ethical concerns, especially when life-altering penalties may be influenced by structural or career-driven pressures rather than proportional justice. In many cases, incarceration environments expose non-violent and first-time offenders to more severe criminal dynamics, increasing the risk of deeper involvement in crime rather than supporting rehabilitation.

This research calls for a closer, evidence-based examination of how these practices align with fundamental human rights principles, including proportionality, due process, and equal protection under the law. It will bring forward comparative case studies from across the world, including models where prison systems are designed to rehabilitate, educate, and empower individuals to reintegrate and contribute positively to society. These examples stand in contrast to systems where prolonged incarceration can limit personal development and create cycles of marginalization. This is an ongoing research effort, and we are actively seeking case studies, including individual experiences, as well as collaboration with academics, practitioners, and organizations committed to advancing fair and humane justice systems. By elevating real-world insights and diverse perspectives, this work aims to challenge existing narratives and support meaningful reform toward systems that prioritize accountability, dignity, rehabilitation, and long-term societal well-being.

Ongoing Research on Human Rights Violations in Iran

This research documents systemic human rights violations in Iran through an evidence-based and analytical lens. Key focus areas include forced confessions and torture, the use of the death penalty in cases tied to political repression and protest-related charges, and the suppression of civil liberties through internet shutdowns, censorship, and digital surveillance. The work draws on verified reporting from reputable media outlets, human rights organizations, and independent investigations to identify patterns of abuse and assess their impact on individuals and society.

The research also examines the gap between Iran’s obligations under international human rights law and its domestic practices, including due process, freedom of expression, and detainee rights. In addition, it reviews findings from UN fact-finding missions related to the “Woman, Life, Freedom” protests and analyzes access to basic utilities—such as clean water and reliable electricity—as a human rights issue, highlighting how governance failures and infrastructure breakdowns have affected daily life, public health, and social stability in recent years.
